Pest Detection & Pest Management

The early detection of recently established exotic species helps to assess the impact and extent of an established pest population before these pests become widespread in the environment. The success of eradication programs or early suppression of exotic species through biological control or other integrated pest management techniques is often dependent upon detecting exotic species while their populations are limited in range and size. The Agricultural Commissioner records and identifies established insects, mites, mollusks, weeds, and plant diseases within Orange County and provides identification services to residents, schools, universities, and private industry through its Entomology and Plant Pathology Laboratories. The Agricultural Commissioner provides assistance to state and federal targeted pest detection programs and assists the University of California in the implementation of integrated pest management efforts.
