Medical Marijuana: The Hazy Debate

Whether or not to permit the use of marijuana for medical purposes is both a public policy issue and a contentious legal issue. Under federal law, marijuana use for any purpose is illegal even for medical reasons. In 2005, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the federal government can still ban possession of the drug in states that have eliminated sanctions for its use in treating symptoms of illness.

Improving South County Traffic Flow

As a resident of South County for more than 20 years and Supervisor of Orange County’s Fifth District, I represent our community’s voice on a daily basis on all County matters. One of my top priorities when I was elected to this position was to protect our region’s quality of life, and I believe that key to this is improving both our current and future mobility.

South County Traffic Solutions

On May 23, 2007, I convened a meeting with the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), CalTrans and public works directors from various South Orange County cities. In addition to helping the Coble family, it is hoped the event will help call attention to needed traffic improvements on the southbound I-5 between La Paz and Crown Valley Parkway.

South County Needs to Finish Toll Road

The spectacular truck crash and fire that destroyed a freeway overpass leading from the Bay Bridge in San Francisco last month should be a wake-up call for Orange County. Today the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway is the only major roadway in and out of south Orange County. The lack of alternate routes through this area has long been frustrating. But, as the East San Francisco Bay Area has learned, it can also be dangerous.
