Supervisor Pat Bates’ 5th District Year-End Review
Submission for Ladera Times January 2009 Issue With the new year upon us, it is appropriate at this time as your representative on the Orange County Board of Supervisors to reflect on Fifth District highlights during 2008 as well as outline some of my goals for 2009. During 2008, I was involved in many significant events affecting the county, including the selection of Sheriff Sandra Hutchins, speaking in support of the 241 Toll Road Extension at a hearing held by the Secretary of Commerce, leading community discussions about a potential power plant that was to be located in Ladera Ranch and advocating for the implementation of a fair and transparent concealed carry weapon permit policy. Among my many efforts, one of my biggest priorities was seeing to it that vital transportation projects were expedited and implemented in the Fifth District. I am proud to offer the following update on some roadway projects we were able to get underway during 2008: -
Intersection improvements made at Ortega Highway and Antonio Parkway. -
Ortega Highway Widening Project commenced to widen the segment of Ortega Highway within the county's jurisdiction from two to four lanes and to build a new bridge across San Juan Creek. The final design plans were approved, permits and construction bids received and a construction contract awarded. -
Design Plans completed for the widening of Antonio Parkway from four to six lanes from San Juan Creek to Ortega Highway. -
Design Plans completed for the widening of a segment of Cow Camp Road, a new 6-lane arterial in the Mission Viejo Ranch Plan. -
Contract approved to prepare an Environmental Impact Report and Project Report for the widening of La Pata Avenue from Ortega Highway to Calle Saluda in San Clemente. -
Freeway interchange improvements currently under construction at Oso Parkway/I-5 and at Crown Valley Parkway/I-5. -
Bridge widening completed on Antonio Parkway to facilitate wildlife crossings. -
In-pavement flashers (school crossing) installed at Sienna Parkway and Flintridge in Ladera Ranch. This year, I will continue my commitment to hold steadfast in my drive toward government accountability and transparency. One of my first actions will be to review and ensure that the county's bidding process is open, fair and encourages competition. Also, given the state of the economy, it is clear that we will be faced with many difficult decisions regarding the budget in the year ahead. It is absolutely imperative that we move forward with fiscally responsible and conservative policies to maintain a sound financial future for the county. Nothing is more important to me than making sure your tax dollars are spent wisely. It is an honor to serve as your Fifth District Supervisor. As always, my door is open and I encourage you to contact my office at (714) 834-3550 with any questions or concerns you may have. Kindest regards, Patricia C. Bates Chair, Board of Supervisors Supervisor, Fifth District
