CSAC Appoints Supervisor Janet Nguyen to California Massage Therapy Council Board of Directors

(Santa Ana) — The California State Association of Counties recently appointed Supervisor Janet Nguyen to the newly-formed California Massage Therapy Council (CMTC) Board of Directors. The CMTC was formed in response to the passage of Senate Bill 731, which Gov. Schwarzenegger signed into law September 27, 2008.

Existing law authorizes the legislative body of a city or county to enact ordinances providing for the licensing and regulation of massage when carried out in that city or county. Commencing September 1, 2009, this bill would provide certification through the CMTC, giving massage therapists a uniform standard for statewide practice, thus replacing the various city and county ordinances.

The Board of Directors meets monthly to establish the guidelines under which massage therapists in California can obtain voluntary certification. The Board will establish a license structure, disciplinary procedures and other application requirements. The CMTC also will certify educational massage programs at schools throughout the state. The Supervisor will serve with members appointed by the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals, the American Massage Therapy Association, as well as those from educational institutions throughout the state.

“I am honored to receive CSAC’s appointment to the CMTC,” Supervisor Janet Nguyen said. “The massage profession is growing at a rapid pace and plays a bigger role each year in our holistic approach to health and treatment; lack of quality control can sometimes lead to negative consequences. It’s time for California to develop professional standards under which this industry can truly thrive.”

Supervisor Janet Nguyen represents the First District on the Orange County Board of Supervisors as Vice Chair. She also serves as Chair of the OCTA’s Transit Committee. She represents more than 600,000 people, covering the cities of Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Westminster and the unincorporated community of Midway City. Orange County ranks sixth in the nation as the most populous county and has the nation’s seventh highest annual budget.
