About OC Human Relations

Board & Commissioners at 2011 Wassail

On June 28, 2011 the Orange County Board of Supervisors approved a contract with OC Human Relations Council (the non-profit organization) to provide staff support to the OC Human Relations Commission.  It was approved at the same funding level as the previous year’s Commission funding, $302,000 with the full support of the Commission and Board of Directors.

OC Human Relations is a unique public/private partnership between the non-profit OC Human Relations Council and the County of Orange.  The County contracts with the OC Human Relations Council to provide staffing and support for the OC Human Relations Commission. OC Human Relations provides programs in collaboration with schools, corporations, individuals, cities and foundations to support a vision of an Orange County where ALL people are valued, respected and included - where our diversity is realized as a source of strength.  You can help further this vision by making a financial contribution.

Support from the community helps to ensure that our programs continue to make a significant impact in the community by:

  • Creating Safe and Inclusive Communities through our award winning BRIDGES school program.

  • Developing Diverse Leaders through programs that empower people to have a voice in the decision making processes of the institutions that affect their lives.

  • Mediating Conflict by encouraging dialog as an alternative to violence and litigation.

  • Building Understanding and Respect among diverse communities, law enforcement and residents so we can discover that we have more in common as human beings than that which separates us into isolated groups.

To achieve these objectives we offer three major programs that form the foundation of our work - BRIDGES: School Inter-Group Relations and Violence Preventions Program, Community Building and Dispute Resolution.  All of our programs are made possible by the generous support of individuals, foundations, businesses and corporations and by our volunteers and Community Partners who give generously of their time and talents. 40th Anniversary Video:

2011 marked 40 years of OC Human Relations' fostering respect among our diverse communities, building youth leadership programs that prevent bullying and violence in schools, raising awareness of hate crimes, helping victims of discrimination, facilitating police and community reconciliation and mediating disagreements between people and communities.

The following video was produced  by Eli Reyna, who celebrated 20 years of service to the Commission this year, and by Commissioner Carol Turpen.  It reviews some of the major issues, key players and the role of the Commission in Civil Rights since its creation in 1971.
