Orange County Receives $4.1 million in Homeless Assistance Grant 

(Santa Ana) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded an $8.7 million homeless assistance grant to the County of Orange under the Continuum of Care Super Notice of Funding Availability (SuperNOFA). The County was recognized for collaboration with hundreds of non-profit organizations and cities on a regional plan to reduce the number of the estimated 19,000 homeless individuals and families in Orange County. The grant is the largest awarded to the County to date.

(Santa Ana) – Less than one mile from Civic Center Plaza, the work site for approximately 6,000 County employees, is Pio Pico Elementary School. Within one square mile around the school, there live 26,000 young people 21 years of age and under. Ninety-eight percent of the students who attend Pio Pico have limited English proficiency; and 93 percent of them receive free or reduced-cost meals.

(Santa Ana) - Today Dr. Mark Horton announced that some members of the public might have been exposed to the virus that causes measles when they attended the Season Finale of the Orange County High School of the Arts at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on June 4, 2000, at 7:30 p.m. One person in attendance was subsequently diagnosed with measles, and this was confirmed by the Orange County Public Health Laboratory.

Biologic Agents Identified 

The purpose of this communication is to confirm that two bacteria were identified among the biological materials removed from the Irvine home of Dr. Larry Ford. As we have stated in the past, there is absolutely no indication of any threat to public health. The organisms, which were found in extremely poor condition, were identified as Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholerae. While both organisms are rare in the United States, they have been responsible for epidemics, particularly in developing countries, where hygiene and medical care are deficient.

Santa Ana, April 28, 2000…The Orange County Environmental Health Division, reminds consumers that the Annual Mussel Quarantine in California will be in effect in Orange County from May 1 through October 31, 2000. Sport harvesting of mussels for human consumption is prohibited along the entire California coastline. All bays and inlets are included in the quarantine. The purpose of this quarantine is to protect the public from deadly poisons which may be present in bivalve mollusks, such as mussels, clams, oysters, and scallops.
