(Santa Ana) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded an $8.7 million homeless assistance grant to the County of Orange under the Continuum of Care Super Notice of Funding Availability (SuperNOFA). The County was recognized for collaboration with hundreds of non-profit organizations and cities on a regional plan to reduce the number of the estimated 19,000 homeless individuals and families in Orange County. The grant is the largest awarded to the County to date.

The organisms, which were found in extremely poor condition, were identified as Salmonella typhi and Vibrio cholerae. While both organisms are rare in the United States, they have been responsible for epidemics, particularly in developing countries, where hygiene and medical care are deficient.

Sport harvesting of mussels for human consumption is prohibited along the entire California coastline. All bays and inlets are included in the quarantine. The purpose of this quarantine is to protect the public from deadly poisons which may be present in bivalve mollusks, such as mussels, clams, oysters, and scallops.
