County to Begin Redistricting Process, Meeting Set for December 20

The County’s Redistricting Committee will meet next week to kick-off the process of redrawing boundaries of the five Supervisorial Districts from Census data to be released in April.

The group will meet at 2 p.m., Dec. 20, in the Board hearing room located on the first floor of the Hall of Administration, 10 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana.

The Board of Supervisors established the Redistricting Committee on Oct. 24 to guide the redistricting process and develop recommendations utilizing the 2000 Census. The current districts were established in 1991 utilizing 1990 Census data.

“The County is very interested in soliciting public involvement in the redistricting process,” said Chuck Smith, First District Supervisor and Chairman of the Board. “The Supervisorial districts that will be created using the 2000 Census data will be based in large measure on public input."

The committee is composed of representatives from each Supervisorial District and staff members from the CEO, County Counsel and the Clerk of the Board.

The members include committee chairman James Campbell of the First District; vice chairman Paul Hernandez of the Third District; Nina Hull, Second District; Dean Olsen, Fourth District and Holly Veale, Fifth District.

Alternate members representing the Board are Barbara Brown, First District; Steve Franks, Second District; George Cardenas, Third District; Tom Coad, Fourth District; and Kay Cotton, Fifth District.

Upcoming Redistricting Committee meetings are set for 2 p.m., Jan. 17 and Feb. 21.
