Public Hearing Scheduled on Plan for Orange County's $48 Million in Proposition 10 Funds
Orange County Children and Families Commission invites public input on proposed Strategic Plan for tobacco tax monies

SANTA ANA - The Orange County Children and Families Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed Strategic Plan to allocate approximately $48 million in annual tobacco tax revenues for early childhood development programs. The public hearing will be held on February 2, 2000 at 9:00 a.m. at the Orange County Planning Commission Hearing Room located at 10 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana.

Proposition 10 - The California Children and Families Act of 1998 was approved by voters in November 1998. It added a 50-cent tax per pack of cigarettes sold in California, and uses the funds raised to support education, health and child care programs that promote healthy early childhood development, from prenatal to age five. The Orange County Children and Families Commission, an independent, nine-member commission, is tasked with overseeing the allocation of funds received through Proposition 10.

The Strategic Plan will help guide the future allocation of the tobacco tax revenues, approximately $48 million annually, so worthwhile programs are selected and effectiveness is measured. The Strategic Plan is currently scheduled for consideration by the Commission at a public meeting on February 16, 2000 at 9:00 a.m. at the same location.
