Supervisor Coad Tries a Different Kind of Ride-Along

(Santa Ana) – The Monday morning ride-along won’t be in a police cruiser this time. On Monday morning (July 10), Fourth District Supervisor Cynthia P. Coad will climb up into the first street sweeper to hit the streets in unincorporated El Modena.

The Board of Supervisors voted in March to include the sweeping of residential streets in unincorporated areas of the county. The Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the act of regular street sweeping as a Best Management Practice for water quality improvement by eliminating refuse before it enters the county’s storm drains. The County’s Public Facilities and Resources Department will perform street sweeping in unincorporated areas on a monthly basis.

Coad has spearheaded a pilot project in El Modena to demonstrate the benefits that will come from community revitalization programs in unincorporated islands. The model project includes code enforcement, community policing and community programs such as neighborhood clean-up days.

"Taking regular street sweeping to the unincorporated areas does two things," said Coad. "It increases community pride by enhancing its cleanliness. And, additionally, it supports our efforts at improving water quality. I’m looking forward to being there Monday to help the community welcome this new service."
