Learners must be at least 16 years old and out of the traditional high school environment. Learners are interviewed and assessed by READ/Orange County Team members and/or trained volunteers prior to being matched with a tutor.
Following assessment, learners are matched with a tutor and are asked to make a 50-hour commitment in the program. Each learner meets with his/her tutor once or twice a week for 11/2 to 2 hours. Tutoring sessions are arranged between the tutor and learner at mutually convenient times and locations. Learner confidentiality is strictly maintained at all times.
Tutoring Sites/Materials:
Tutoring sessions are held in various locations. Six of the 28 branches within the Orange County Public Library system have established literacy centers with tutoring space, private carrels, and an extensive collection of literacy teaching materials. Additionally, we have literacy centers in Orange and Santa Ana Public Libraries.
Literacy Centers have also been set up at a number of other agencies where READ/Orange County provides literacy services. In addition, READ/Orange County Team members are available to meet with tutor/learner pairs and recommend teaching materials and techniques as well as to help deal with any challenges that may arise.
