Volunteer Information
Tutors:
Tutors are volunteers from the community and must be at least 18 years old. No previous teaching experience is required. Qualifications are: the ability to speak, read, and write English; compassion, understanding, and sensitivity to learners; the willingness to be trained and open-mindedness to accept new teaching concepts.
Males and females of all ethnic backgrounds are welcome, as are volunteers with physical handicaps that won't prevent them from functioning as tutors. Tutor/learner pairs schedule dates, times, and location of tutoring sessions to fit their mutual convenience. Click here to Register.
Our Tutor Training Program:
Tutors are required to attend 23 hours of basic training prior to tutoring an adult learner. The course is conducted by professional trainers certified by Literacy Volunteers of America. Tutor trainees receive comprehensive workbooks and other materials to assist with their tutoring.
During training, tutors receive information about how to teach reading and writing to adults, and have the opportunity to practice various teaching techniques as demonstrated by the instructor.
Following the basic training, on going tutor support and specialized training classes in specific techniques are offered. These include the 18-hour Wilson Training (a method used with learners exhibiting characteristics commonly associated with dyslexia) and Lindamood Bell (a method used with students who have sound discrimination difficulties). In addition, quarterly meetings/inservices are held to enhance tutor skills. Click here to Register.
Tutoring Sites/Materials:
Tutoring sessions are held in various locations. Six of the 28 branches within the Orange County Public Library system have established literacy centers with tutoring space, private carrels, and an extensive collection of literacy teaching materials. Additionally, we have literacy centers in Orange and Santa Ana Public Libraries.
Literacy Centers have also been set up at a number of agencies where READ/Orange County provides literacy services. In addition, READ/Orange County Team members are available to meet with tutors and recommend teaching materials and techniques as well as to help deal with any challenges that may arise.
