How IHSS Hours Are Authorized?

The social worker determines how much time is needed to perform each task; evaluates the availability of help from other household members or other resources; obtains appropriate medical information; and establishes the number of hours to be authorized for payment.

Who can be a care provider?

In Orange County, you hire and supervise your own provider. Immigrant provider must have working permit from INS and provider from 16-18 year olds must have school working permit. Providers will be required to provide documentation that they may legally work in the United States of America.

How Do I find a provider?

To find a provider you can do one of the following:

  • Ask for assistance from your social worker or public authority worker to locate a care provider.

  • Put an ad on the newspaper, at the college, or at the Multi Purpose Senior Services Center.

  • Get referrals from friends or neighbors.

  • The IHSS Public Authority can help you find a provider.

How does the provider get paid?

Timesheets are mailed to providers. The client and provider must sign and date the timesheet. The actual provider payments are issued by the State of California directly to the provider.

What is IHSS Share-of-Cost?

The IHSS Share-of-Cost program allows a person with higher income to receive IHSS if he/she pays part of the cost. A share-of-cost is the amount of money that an IHSS recipient must pay to his/her IHSS provider every month to "share-the-cost" of the recipient's IHSS. The State of California pays the rest each month to the IHSS provider.
