Aliso Viejo

Aliso Viejo has 19 Internet workstations for the public; they are all loaded with Microsoft Word. Plus the library has a manual typewriter. The 8 public access catalogs are also linked to several online research databases.

Adult Programs:
The Adult Book Group meets the third Tuesday of every month at 10:30 am.

Children's Prgorams (School Year):

  • Preschool Story Time: Story time for children 3 1/2 to 6 is offered in nine-week sessions Tuesday afternoons at 1:15 p.m. Registration is required.
  • Toddler Story time: Story time for 2 and 3 year olds, with an adult, is held in nin-week sessions Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 11:00 a.m.
  • Pajama Story time: Story time for shool age children with an adult is offered in nine-week sessions Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Monthly Programs (School Year):

  • After School Club Club (stories and crafts) for 1st to 4th graders is held the first Wednesday of each month, October through June, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
  • Family Story time with the National Charity League's Sunshine Readers for all ages is held the first Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Summer Months:

  • Summer Reading Game: Keep kids reading over the summer! In our eight-week game, kids can earn free books and chances to win prizes by reading library books and visiting the library!
  • Summer Story times will be held throughout the week - check our schedule for current times.
  • School Age Events for kids Kindergarten and up include special performers.

Special Collections:
The branch houses a modest collection of technology-related books and magazines, children and young adult paperbacks, a bestseller rental collection, and local and regional newspapers. Costa Mesa has available 24 Public Internet Workstations and 1 Online Public Access Catalogs (OPAC) to search and request materials from the OCPL system.

Technology Instructional Programs:
Computer training is currently being offered on searching the Orange County Public Access Catalog, subscription databases, Email, and searching the World Wide Web. Everday at the Library...
We regularly feature works of art from the Niguel Art Association. These are prominently displayed on our walls and are furnished and rotated monthly by the Association's membership. Area residents utilize our public display cases to mount exhibits of materials of interest to our general community. These also change monthly.

Volunteers
Dana Point Library actively solicits and encourages volunteers. We have many placement opportunities in various areas of the library. An intake interview is required and training is provided. Volunteer openings include: book shelving, book cleaning, grounds maintenance, photocopying, limited research, telephone calling, art assistance, database instruction and Spanish language assistance. Friends of the Library
The Friends of Dana Point Library is an active and vital group organized in support of our library services.In addition, the Friends have various volunteer needs for special tasks and events as well as in their bookstore. Bookstore volunteers work with a buddy and training is provided.

There are currently no CD-ROM Databases available to the public now at Heritage Park (we're getting rid of the old computer that houses the insurance and AAA CD ROM databases).

1. American Indian Multimedia Encyclopedia
Contains the full text of four reference sources no Native Americans as well as the full text of over 250 documents and treaties involving Native Americans since the 18th century. Information on over 150 tribes and cultures and over 100 stories and legends is also included.
2. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
Mavis Beacon teaches keyboarding and dictation, and measures typing speed and accuracy through a series of games and lessons.

Friends of Heritage Park Library:
The Friends of the Heritage Park Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the library through volunteer labor and the operation of a bookstore. New members are always welcome to the Friends of the Library (FOL).

Irvine University Park

The Irvine University Park Library is located on 4512 Sandburg Way in the heart of Irvine. The library has been serving the local Irvine community since 1975. It is conveniently located near several schools, including University High, Rancho San Joaquin Middle School, University Park Elementary and Village Montessori. It is also close to Concordia University, the Univeristy of California, Irvine and the Irvine Barclay Theatre. There is also plenty of shopping nearby, including the Saturday Farmer?s Market near UCI.

The library serves a diverse population and maintains a large collection of foreign materials in Chinese, Persian, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Spanish and a small selection in other languages. Materials include books for children and adults, videos, DVDs, music cds and some newspapers and magazines.

Computers are available for patrons to easily access library databases and the catalog. Free Wifi/wireless access and over a dozen computers with Internet access, or programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher offer the public convenient ways of access to electronic resources.

Friendly and professional library staff offer assistance in finding a good book to read, assisting with research queries, and accessing electronic information. Storytime, craft activity days, and other programs for families are offered in the Children?s Room.

Offering used books at reasonable prices, the Friends of the Library Bookstore is conveniently located next to the library parking lot. The free book section is especially popular! We appreciate your donations of books as all proceeds benefit the library.

Ladera Ranch

The Ladera Ranch Branch of the Orange County Public Library is located in the Administration Building of the Ladera Ranch Elementary and Middle School.

This is a unique collaboration between the Capistrano Unified School District and the Orange County Public Library.

The Upstairs Library
The main public area is located on the upper level. This space is highlighted by a beautiful vaulted ceiling, skylights, and up-lighting to enhance the feeling of spaciousness. The circulation and information desks are constructed of cherry wood, blending with the bold, natural colors throughout the building.This level is designed to serve the preschool population, young adults (15+) and adults.

  • Preeschool: Our preschool population canl enjoy the Story Room, where they will hear favorite stories, see puppet shows, and share in presentations designed especially for them. They will also enjoy the picture and easy reader books in their own special section of the collection.
  • 15+: For our older teens, the library offers a young adult collection - designed with them in mind - and a quiet room for intense, uninterrupted study. The teens will also have input into library activities through a teen council, which will offer suggestions for programs, provide tutoring for younger students, and possibly be a source of candidates for paid page positions in the library.
  • Adult Services: Adults will enjoy the full range of services provided in the OCPL system, including public access computers, reference, non-fiction and fiction collections, etc. READ-OC, The library's adult literacy program, will have a dedicated room in the library. Library sponsored community programming will be offered to serve the pleasure of the adults of the community as well as the children and young adults.

The Downstairs Library:
The lower level is a soaring two-story space, accented by the staircase descending from the adult level. The collection, selected and provided by Capistrano Unified School District and the Orange County Public Library, is specifically designed to serve the information and recreational reading needs of children in elementary and middle school.

  • Services: Served by the Children's librarian, this area will offer the usual school library and instructional media services during the school day, traditional public library children's services in the afternoons, evenings and Saturday. Public Access Computers located on this level are filtered.

    Access to this space is restricted to school use during regular school hours. Material in the downstairs collection can be retrieved for members of the public by the library staff if needed while school is in session.

Children's Programs:
The Tustin Branch Library provides a welcome environment for children of all ages and their parents. Notable collections include parenting, ABCs, 1-2-3s, concept books, board books, juvenile Spanish, holidays, and winners of the Caldecott and Newbery Award medals. Programs include storytimes for preschool children, evening PJ Storytimes presented by the Tustin Tellers, the annual Summer Reading Celebration with a "Read Aloud/Read Along" component for pre-readers, and other book-related programs throughout the year.

Tune in here to see our line-up of Fall programs!? We'll be offering a monthly crafty kids story hour for children ages 6-10. An early literacy storytime program is also being planned.

Teen Programs:
Teen Services aims to educate, entertain, and encourage teens to make the library an important part of their lives.

Our programs suit a variety of interests. Check out our art programs, game nights and S.A.T. practice tests. During the school year teens meet for a weekly Animanga Club and a bi-weekly Teen Writer's Club.

Teens can contribute to the Tustin Library by serving on the Teen Advisory Board, being Homework Helpers to children, or by general volunteering. We also offer a Summer Reading Program geared towards teens. They can attend one of our weekly events or keep a reading log with chances to win prizes..

Adult Programs:
Tustin Library hosts an ongoing book discussion club which meets monthly, every second Wednesday, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Members choose the books they will read and discuss. Periodic dinners pepper the annual calendar.

Topics-on-Demand workshops are offered periodically. The most recent was an Ikebana flower arranging workshop, accompanied by Japanese tea and treats. The Tustin Library staff responds to patron interests and requests.

We're working on a book-to-film program and programs for Boomers. To share your interests, call the Library at 714-544-7724.

The Friends of the Tustin Library is a non-profit (501C-3) organization supporting the Tustin Library through volunteer efforts and fund-raising activities. The Friends are a happy, committed group always eager to welcome new members. Members may take advantage of early bird specials at the twice-yearly Grand Book Sales.

The Friends welcome your tax-deductible donations of gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and videos. Textbooks, dated encyclopedias, and shabby materials are not accepted - saleable condition items only, please.

The Friends Board meetings are held the second Monday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Tustin Library. No meetings are held in July and August.

Volunteers:
The Tustin Library welcomes community volunteers of all ages. You may help with a variety of tasks:

  • Merry Menders process new materials as well as repair well-used items
  • Cover Crew labels and covers books and materials
  • "Amelia Bedelias" help with light housekeeping
  • Tustin Tellers share stories, songs, and stretches during evening PJ Storytimes with children 3-6 years old
  • Rockin' & Readin' Grandma & Gramps read picture books to children
  • Green Thumbs help keep our indoor plants happy and healthy

We're looking for people who might want to present a program or start a Travel Club, Book-to-Film Club, or Cooking from Books Club.

Special Collections:
The Westminster Branch has a large collection of Asian language materials, emphasizing Vietnamese. Visually impaired patrons are served with a Kurzweil Reading Machine (reads a book), materials from the Braille Library, and large print books.

Westminster Teens:
We have a Teen Librarian who works just for you! Join the Teen Advisory Board and help us add the books, magazines, CDs, DVDs and videos you want in your very own section of the Library.

Westminster Adult Book Discussion Club:
Join us every third Tuesday of the month at 10:30 am for "food for thought." Yes, we have snacks and lively conversation about various books of your choosing! Call the library for the book of the month. Join us even if you haven't read the book.

READ / Orange County:
maintains a Literacy Center within the library and is always looking for tutors and students.

Westminster Volunteers:
The Westminster Library welcomes Community Volunteers, Teens, and Seniors. Our recruiting efforts continue daily. Volunteers are needed to assist with a wide variety of tasks including: processing new books, returning material to the shelves, repairing, covering and labeling library materials, grounds maintenance, light housekeeping, maintaining special collections, such as classic books, foreign language, CDs, cassettes, cookbooks, etc. and instruction on the computer.

Friends of the Westminster Library:
The Westminster Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Westminster Branch Library through volunteer labor and fund raising activities. The Friends are always looking for new members! For information about the Friends call 714 898-4245.

Friends of the Library Silent Book Auction is continuous and features a variety of subjects monthly. Drop by the lobby of the library and browse these exciting collector's items.

The Westminster Friends of the Library Used Bookstore is open:

  • Monday: 10am - 4pm

  • Friday: 10am - 4pm
  • Saturday: 10am - 4pm
  • Sunday: Closed

The store sells books starting at 25 cents each. The store also sells magazines, computer software, encyclopedias, books, recordings, special interest items and reference books. The Friends welcome your tax deductible donations of used books and other materials.

Administration

At this facility, all the materials you find in your local branch are evaluated, selected, cataloged, ordered, paid for, processed and distributed out to the library branches. The offices for the County Librarian and other library administrators are also located here.

There are no materials available to the public in this building.
